Anniversary
November last year in Peru and I served ten years. For me it was love at first sight. And though we met by chance, without having planned or even thought of before, was an encounter that has shaped my life. I can not imagine who would be today without having made that trip. As a child I saw a documentary about astronauts, where one of them commented on his experience of seeing the world Earth from the universe. He said he felt a mixture of tenderness and responsibility. A feeling for the planet that has changed perspective forever. I do not know why I recorded both his testimony, but I also wanted to feel something like that someday.
It happened when I crossed the Atlantic on my first trip to Peru. And although so far not come to find out why and what this link has become so strong, I find some logic. You have to be predisposed to appreciate and love certain things, landscapes and people. I immediately recognized that I came to the place of my dreams, or rather to a place in the story that I did not dare to think existed. Not that I had found something so beautiful and idyllic, but it was something stronger than was unable and unwilling to resist. A force so far in my life was missing. Suddenly it did not matter who did not speak the language, I just decided to understand, communicate anyway.
now I wonder if that thing was that I liked so much, could not say. Were about twenty days in which I have seen only Lima and the north coast. Many things have shocked, surprised, gave me grief, I've loved or disliked. I've seen places and people that I was afraid. But I could not help but feel the attraction and curiosity. I do not always appeal must be positive. In other words, can be positive to arouse strong emotions, if that's what we want. And just as not all the unknown has to be attractive, but it can be if we want. I was interested. Watched people on the street and asked me to speak, I saw sleeping in the vans and was wondering where they went and took lives, read words like "Canto Grande" and "Stone Bridge" did not understand but sounded very poetic . I wondered how the people of the name "Toll", whose lights shone in the darkness of the desert.
Since then I have learned a lot of things. Not only in Peru but also for myself. I realized that speak Castilian things has awakened in me that know. Did not feel the same fear to express what happened to me in Czech. I found that this fear caused by not knowing enough, the fact of not being perfect as a Czech paralyzed me from the Czechs, that fear disappeared when I became an alien woman who did not have to speak well and that even expected to be different. It was very liberating, something that has helped me develop.
The English was not the first language I was learning, but neither the Russian nor English, something similar has happened to me because it was not associated with anything specific. In contrast, the English was part of something more complex than learning not to learn, but to understand a world. I found many parallels between Czech and English, especially in the way of saying things, creating sentences, the flexibility of words. It is said that English is easy to learn, at least in the beginning. I started reading and writing letters. At that time spent much time traveling by train from Prague to Moravia. All weekend undertook the journey of 5 hours and I went with my book and dictionary, writing. But then, when you arrive to Peru for the second time, did not understand much. He could say almost everything I needed but used to the speed and speaks of the Lima was more difficult. The mystery of the words still there, and come to understand has become a passion for me. Learning to live caused me great satisfaction. After seven months she dreamed in Castilian.
Before, when talking to myself, I spoke in dialect Prague despite loud he could not leave my accent Moravian. Now I took the Prague and the Moravian accent does not come out, but in my mind I speak in Castilian. Not always, but often is. I do not know why, but I am speaking Castilian other. More expressive, more communicative and more joyful. But more daring, more flirty and more rude. At least I think so. Because I do not know. I can not know how is my version in English. Like I'll never know how it sounds when I speak, how strong my accent or how I make mistakes. But what matter? The important thing is that there are people who despite all understand what I say.
